7 Mistakes You’re Making with Car Insurance Quotes in Ohio (and How to Fix Them)
We’ve all been there. You’re sitting at your kitchen table, scrolling through a dozen tabs, trying to figure out why your current insurance bill just jumped $40 a month. You start typing your info into those "quick quote" websites, hoping for a miracle, only to be bombarded with phone calls from robots three minutes later.
Getting car insurance quotes in Ohio shouldn’t feel like a part-time job or a stressful guessing game. At Rise Insurance, we see drivers every day who are trying to do the right thing: protecting their family and their budget, but they are accidentally falling into common traps that end up costing them thousands on their worst days.
Whether you’re in Clintonville, Columbus, or anywhere across the Buckeye State, here are the seven biggest mistakes we see Ohioans make with their auto insurance, and, more importantly, how you can fix them.
1. Choosing "State Minimum" Liability Limits
It’s tempting to click the "Economy" or "Basic" option to see the lowest possible number. In Ohio, the state minimum for liability is 25/50/25. That means:
$25,000 for bodily injury per person. This limit pays for all medical bills, lost wages, and pain & suffering if you hurt one person.
$50,000 total for bodily injury per accident. This is the total limit for all medical bills, lost wages, and pain & suffering if you hurt more than one person; however, the per-person limit still applies.
$25,000 for property damage. This limit pays to repair damage caused to vehicles, buildings, or any other property of someone else in an accident you cause.
The Reality Check: If you cause an accident that totals a new SUV (which can easily cost $60,000+) or results in a serious hospital stay, $25,000 won't even cover the first few hours. Once your insurance limit is reached, you are personally on the hook for the rest. That means your savings, your home equity, and your future wages could be at risk.
The Fix: We almost always recommend increasing those limits to at least 100/300/100. It sounds like a lot more coverage, but the cost difference is often less than the price of a single pizza night per month.
2. Declining Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Did you know that about 1 in 8 drivers in Ohio are driving without insurance? That’s a staggering statistic. Even more drivers carry only the bare minimums we just discussed.
If one of those drivers hits you, and you’ve declined Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage to save a few bucks on your quote, you might be left paying your own medical bills and repair costs out of pocket.
The Fix: Never skip UM/UIM coverage. It is arguably the most important part of your policy because it protects you and your family from others' mistakes.
3. Only Shopping for Rates Every 5 Years
We get it: life is busy. If your insurance is on autopay, it’s easy to let it sit for years. However, the insurance market in Ohio is constantly shifting. Rates change, new "tech-forward" carriers enter the market, and your own "risk profile" improves as you get older or maintain a clean record.
The Fix: You should look at Ohio auto insurance rates at least once every 12 to 18 months. At Rise Insurance, we do the heavy lifting for you. Since we work with a wide range of insurance providers, we can reshop your coverage across multiple companies without you having to fill out a single new form.
4. Ignoring the "Tech" and "Safety" Discounts
Many people miss out on the best car insurance rates because they don't realize how much modern technology can save them. If you have a car with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warnings, or even just a high safety rating, you should be getting a discount.
Furthermore, many carriers now offer Telematics programs (apps that monitor your driving habits). If you’re a safe driver who doesn't slam on the brakes at every light, you could see a massive reduction in your premium.
The Fix: Ask your agent specifically about "Usage-Based Insurance" or safety feature discounts. It’s one of the easiest ways to get cheap car insurance in Ohio without sacrificing the quality of your coverage.
5. Playing "Deductible Roulette"
When people want to lower their monthly bill, the first thing they do is hike their deductible to $1,000 or $2,000. While this does lower your premium, it creates a "liquidity trap."
The Risk: If you have a $1,000 deductible but don't have $1,000 sitting in an emergency fund, a small fender bender could leave your car stuck in the shop for weeks because you can’t afford the "entry fee" to get it fixed.
The Fix: Balance your deductible with your actual bank balance. If you don't have a dedicated emergency fund, a $500 deductible is usually the "sweet spot" for most Ohio families.
6. Forgetting to Update Life Milestones
Insurance isn't just about your car; it’s about your life. Many drivers forget to update their policy when:
They get married (Married couples almost always get lower rates).
They move to a new zip code (Even moving from one side of Columbus to the other can change your rate).
Their commute changes (Working from home? You should be paying less!).
A teen driver is heading off to college without a car.
The Fix: Check with your local agent or schedule a quick call with our team to see how these milestones affect your overall protection plan.
7. Going "Direct" Instead of "Independent"
The biggest mistake of all? Thinking that the big "lizard" or "flo" websites are the only way to get a quote. When you go directly to a big carrier, you are talking to a salesperson who can only sell you one product. If their price goes up, they can't help you.
The Rise Insurance Difference: As an independent agency, we don't work for the insurance companies: we work for you. We compare the "big names" against local and specialized carriers to find the perfect fit for your unique situation.
